What is "independent self-study"?

A form of education in which there is no interaction with an instructor or other course participants. That means you will work through the readings and exercises on your own, in your own time, pace and style. You are in control and the course material is designed to facilitate this.

What is the time required to complete this course?

Because the course is self-paced and the background and experience of the participants is varied, the time required to do the course will vary a great deal for each learner. The course material has been presented as two 8-hour workshops, but, as such, it did not have the opportunities for practice and review that are provided in this online format. It would be reasonable to anticipate spending 20 to 24 hours on the course.

My workplace requires us to take a course in crisis intervention. Will this training fulfill that requirement?

You will need to check the curriculum of the required training. Many training standards use the term "crisis intervention" to describe the management of volatile situations including the use of non-abusive restraints. This course does not specifically address those topics. Instead it deals with the psycho-social aspects of crisis and crisis support.

What if several of us in one workplace want to take the course together?

Terrific! This would be great for reducing the loneliness of independent study — you can support and encourage each other. We simply ask that each of you register and pay the course fee. This will give each person her/his own password and course access. It will also support the maintenance and on-going development of the course. We have tried to keep the cost reasonable so that this is not a burden or a barrier for anyone. If you have further questions about this, contact us. (see below)

Is there a certificate for this course?

There is no certificate provided because the course is entirely self-directed. There is no monitoring of time spent on the course, sections completed, or quiz results, so we would have no basis on which to issue a certificate. If needed, we would be willing to issue a letter confirming the dates of your registration in the course.

The course is designed to facilitate self-directed learning for professional development. It may also serve as a helpful review for those preparing to write the Crisis Worker Certification exam offered by the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention. If you are interested in certification for crisis work, you may want to look further into that process.
