Family Violence Workshop Modules

Understanding Violence in Relationships (Domestic Violence Core Module)  – 3.5 hours

This introductory session will allow participants to become familiar with the topic of abuse and its implications in our community, recognize when abuse may be occurring, and to examine and evaluate their own attitudes towards domestic and family violence.

This core module provides a solid foundation of knowledge around the topic of family violence and is strongly recommended for those who wish to complete more advanced training modules in domestic violence at The Support Network.

Participants will learn:

  • Identify different types of abuse, risk factors, and clues and warning signs for abusive relationships
  • Increase awareness of the prevalence of domestic violence and its impacts on diverse populations in our community
  • Describe the cycle of abuse and how it applies in various relationships
  • Become aware of resources in the community that offer support for those who are experiencing domestic violence

Dying to Get Out: The Link between Suicide and Family Violence (Domestic Violence Module 2)  – 3 hours

Risk factors for suicide are easily overlapped with the risk factors for domestic violence and domestic homicide.  This workshop will examine the risk of suicide from several perspectives and roles, including children exposed to family violence and offenders, as well as the person experiencing abuse.  

Prior training in Suicide Awareness/Intervention and Family Violence is recommended but not a requirement for participation in this workshop.

Participants will learn:

  • Learn how the cycle of abuse and dynamics of violent relationships can contribute to thoughts of suicide
  • Be able to recognize and respond to suicide as a form of manipulation in domestic violence
  • Know how to ask about suicide and assess the threat and risk level
  • Explore strategies for effective safety and action planning with a person who is experiencing abuse

Domestic Violence Intervention: Practical Risk Assessment and Management (Domestic Violence Module 3) -  7 hours

In this workshop we will explore a collaborative approach to working with clients at risk and supporting interventions that increase the likelihood that domestic violence will not be repeated. This workshop is suited for those who are supporting friends, family members or clients who may be at risk for, or experiencing domestic violence.

Through practical exercises, role plays and group discussion, participants will learn the essential skills of domestic violence risk assessment and response as they relate to both child and adult populations. 

Prior attendance in the Family Violence Core module "Understanding Violence in Relationships" is a requirement for registration in this workshop.

Participants will learn:

  • Know how to ask about Domestic Violence and assess the threat and risk level;
  • Explore strategies for comprehensive, effective safety and action planning with children and adults experiencing abuse;
  • Learn how to adapt response strategies according to a Model for Change and its implications on a client's changing needs;
  • Increase awareness of community resources and how to connect those-at-risk to these supports.
