History

The Support Network is pleased to be celebrating more than 50 years of service in the community.

We’ve been around since 1960, when the Welfare Information Service was first founded to build and maintain an accurate listing of Edmonton’s community services. Since then we’ve incorporated a lot of new services, and brought on a host of new people, to become the community focused organization we are today.

The name The Support Network didn’t come into being until 1993, which happens to be the same year we established our 24/7 crisis Intervention program.

In the past decade we’ve seen our organization and programs flourish. Our distress line service won the Leader of Tomorrow award in 2000. In 2005 The Support Network was nominated for the Crisis Center of Excellence award by the American Association of Suicidology.

Today we serve 70,000 clients each year and answer 1,500 calls every month. We accomplish everything we do with the help of 41 staff and 20,000 generously donated volunteer hours.
